Many handymen start working with the basics of Ikea furniture. Pimping or often improving such furniture is called an IKEA Hack. This allows you to make the furniture exactly according to your wishes. Ordering sawn sheet material online makes it easy to get started with an IKEA hack yourself. In this project Willie shows how she provided her IKEA Kallax cupboard with a back wall.
Description of Willie
Kallax cabinet is supplied without a back wall as standard. I now have a back wall that I ordered online so that my books can remain dust-free and the wall also provides more stability
How I made this project
The cabinet comes with a good user manual. After assembling I checked the dimensions and ordered a white hardboard back wall for both (I have two), 2 cm less wide and shorter so that the wall stays nicely within the edges. The 3mm thickness was chosen: 1) it can easily be secured with self-tapping screws and 2) it does not make the cabinet very heavy. The wall was well finished and ready to go. Screwed in place with self-tapping screws and after the 'inspection' the cabinet could be upright and looks nicely finished.
Dimensions of my DIY project
Outside dimensions: 177.0 x 112.0 cm
Wall size: 175.0 x 110.0 cm
