In this DIY project, Joram shares his experience with assembling, building and finishing a beautiful custom cabinet. He chose MDF so that he can paint the cabinet himself. Read more about his experience below.

Description of Joram

At the beginning of 2023, the idea arose to have a custom cabinet made. Why? Because there was no other cabinet that met our wishes 'ready-made'. Wishes; - Functional (lots of storage space) - Cupboard up to the ceiling - Cupboard in the same color as the wall behind it - Lighting in the cupboard - Sufficient space for home accessories We soon came across this handy webshop and were inspired by the many DIY projects. We first drew a sketch of the cabinet on paper after which we drew it in the TOSIZE configurator. The employees were very cooperative and attentive, which resulted in a number of adjustments until we ended up with the best cabinet for us. The cupboard arrived at the beginning of June, after which the project could really start!

How I made this project

Assembling the cupboard, what we were actually dreading the most, it was done in no time! The drawing spoke for itself and the parts could actually only be put together in one way. I think it took us, two people, about 2 hours to build such a large cupboard. Once the cupboard was assembled, I proceeded as follows: - Wiped the cupboard and doors with thinner to ensure the MDF was as good as possible. as possible and remove any adhesive residue - Sand the cabinet and doors with 180 grit - Wipe the cabinet and doors again, but then with Universol (degreaser) - Make preparations for lighting - Make the cabinet plinth for the top of the cabinet (on the way it looks even more as if the cupboard connects to the ceiling and you don't get a cast shadow) - Cabinet and doors primed twice - Sealant where necessary (especially in the places where the seams of the open compartments are visible) - Prime some parts a 3rd time (MDF sucked quite a bit) - 2 layers of water-based paint in the color of your choice (in our case the same color as the wall, even if it looks different in the photo. Color is discover from Histor, but had it mixed in another brand) - After 3 layers of primer and 2 layers of topcoat it already looked good. To provide extra protection, I have treated the parts that are used intensively (all horizontal parts and doors) with a 'topcoat 2K interior mat'. This is a 2-component PU acrylic. Once the 2 components have been mixed, it must be used within 45 minutes. This paint is extra strong and is resistant to hand grease (which is useful with greasy children's hands). Initially, I had already hung the hinged doors in the cupboard before I started painting. During the (painting) process I discovered that it is much more convenient to treat all shelves and doors separately and to assemble them last! This works much more pleasantly. Fortunately the weather was always nice, so I was able to let all the parts dry outside (there were quite a few parts). I must honestly say that there was a lot of work in painting. I was slightly wrong about this, but the result is impressive! In any case, we are very happy with it. The service from opmaatzagen.nl was great and you really get value for money!
